Maybe reconsider Logic as well, it honestly eclipses Pro Tools in a lot of respects and "industry standard" these days just means that big recording studios with 10 year old HD (or even native) rigs are running it because its stable and you don't rock the boat in expensive setups like that. Just make sure its currently usable/compatible with your Apogee. If you feel you "have" to stay with Apple on this, seriously reconsider the M1 Mac Mini. It's rough right now - the M1 Mac Mini is some of the best value in computing available and that includes for the purposes of audio production.Įven running apps through Rosetta 2, you're going to get better performance than those old Mac Minis for not much more price-wise (seriously, the base M1 Mac Mini is likely to handle everything you're doing).

I was certainly glad the Guitar Center steered me back from PC to Apple to retain use of the Duet 2.

We've been out of recording for 5 years, so some of what I'm thinking we should do might not be right, so feel free to suggest a different approach.

Sorry for the long description above, but felt it would be helpful to lay out the full scenario.

It seems like many of the 2012 Mac Mini's are running Catalina - so as long as Catalina works well with Pro Tools it should be usable. I suspect it will be powerful enough, but I'm more concerned if Apple or Pro Tools makes some change down the line that makes the old 2012 Mini no longer work. Of the Mac Minis, from what I read, it seems like the 2012 is the best choice. I like the Mac Mini because I want to build a small custom wood board to mount the Mac Mini and Duet 2 on so we have a single mobile unit to carry around since recording will take place in different locations and rooms. Most of the stuff he records will be a total of maybe 8 to 10 tracks (given that drums will be stereo out of the DTExtreme iii instead of individually mic'ed drums). I don't like Apple's new computers and I'm ok if an older Mac takes a bit longer to process (as long as it's not ridiculous). It looks like the perpetual Pro Tools for students is $329, so I'm ok with that.īottom Line: I don't want to sacrifice recording sound quality at all, so I'm staying with Apple for the Duet 2 and I'm fine with the investment in Pro Tools. He was very familiar with Logic, but he's an engineering student and should pick up on Pro Tools fairly quickly. My son is actually the musician, I'm very involved in the music development, but he will be doing all the recording and playing. Also, when we did some work in the studio, it would have been helpful to know Pro Tools to work better with the engineer.

Most seem to feel Logic and Pro Tools are roughly on par, but I really want to be done with Apple from a software perspective. I felt then, and doubly feel now, that I'd rather be on Pro Tools as the industry standard. Recording Software: I bought Logic for around $500 many years ago and still have the 10-disk package (not sure what version). I want to use an older Mac for the reasons stated and to minimize expense. I went to Guitar Center to buy a PC interface to replace the Apogee (I don't really ever use the PreSonus 8-port), and the guy at the desk basically said the sound quality of any affordable PC interface is going to be far below the Duet 2. I'm sick of all of that, so I was actually determined to switch to a PC for Pro Tools, until I realized my Apogee Duet 2 and my PreSonus FireWire 8 port wouldn't work on the PC. On an OS level, my experience is that Apple takes away functionality (I have some important software that won't run on Catalina for example). That said, I hate Apple (the company) and their latest computers that can't be updated, usb-c only ports, are very expensive for larger disk storage, and are unrepairable after AppleCare runs out. Regarding Apple computer choice: We are almost exclusively an Apple house for computers, phones, and tablets. Here is a little more background to answer some of the questions. Thanks for all the great info and sorry for the delay in responding.
